Samburu National Reserve

At a glance

This three-day wildlife safari to Samburu National Reserve starts in Nairobi, where we collect you from your hotel or home. It takes you well away from the city and into Kenya’s northern frontier, crossing several regions of the country with Mount Kenya in view in the distance. In Samburu you look for the reserve’s own special five (Beisa oryx, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and the gerenuk, or giraffe antelope) as well as big cats such as leopard and lion.

Day by day

From Nairobi north to Samburu

We collect you from your hotel or the airport and drive north to Samburu National Reserve, crossing the Equator on the way and arriving in time for lunch. At 4pm you go out on an afternoon game drive in a reserve known for its wild, semi-arid scenery and its large numbers of animals and birds. Samburu is best known for the rare northern Kenya species called the ‘Samburu Five’ (gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich), which you will not find in Kenya’s other popular parks and reserves. All of Africa’s big cats live here as well (lion, cheetah and leopard), together with other big game such as elephant, buffalo, warthog, hippo, impala, waterbuck and many more.

A full day in Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast you have the whole day to explore Samburu National Reserve and its many attractions. This is the home of the Samburu people, who are pastoralists. The Ewaso Nyiro River along the southern boundary shelters crocodile and hippo, and many other animals come down to drink in the heat of the day. Buffalo, leopard, lion, cheetah, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and other plains game are all likely sightings.

Samburu back to Nairobi

The day can begin with an optional early-morning game drive, after which you return to the lodge for breakfast. You may then visit a local Samburu village and spend time with the people who live there (at extra cost). Afterwards you leave for Nairobi, stopping for lunch on the way, and arrive in the evening, when we drop you at your hotel or the airport for your onward plans.
